Youth Bowler Displays Perseverance in Competition

National youth bowler, Michaela Oehler was the highest finisher from our Singapore's team in the 38th Penang Pesta International Open. Michaela finished tenth in the Women's Open Masters and was the only bowler from our team to advance to the second stage of the Women's Open Masters held on 23 December 2010 at Sunshine Square, Penang.

During the Women's Open Masters, Michaela together with fellow bowlers Calista Tan and Ilma Nur Jannah qualified to the Women's Open Masters Qualifiers, however Calista and Ilma were knocked out in the semi-finals and finished in the 13th and 15th positions respectively.

"I told myself to keep my focus during the competition and though I was tired, I did not give up and continued to give my best performance," said Michaela. "The support from my mum, my team mates and Coach Eugene kept me going despite me feeling tired after days of qualifying and to go through the Women's Open Masters that followed the next day after the Youth Open Masters."

Michaela Oehler, 1st Runner-Up in Youth Girls Open Division
Michaela competed hard against other prominent female bowlers which included Sharon Koh and Esther Cheah of Malaysia and Clara Lau of Singapore who came in third in the 41st Singapore National Bowling Championships. For a young bowler like Michaela, it is definitely a challenging task for her during the Masters, being the only bowler from our team to advance to the Women's Open division finals and having to compete against other bowlers who had more bowling experience from major games and competition.

Apart from the Women's Open division, Michaela came in second in the Youth Girls Open division with a total of 2046 pinfalls after 10 games in the Masters, finishing behind champion Syaidatul Afifah of Malaysia with 2133 pinfalls.

"Frankly, I did not expect a podium finish. I was just focussed on doing my best and carrying out the skills taught by my coaches." Said Michaela.

When asked about what she's hoping to achieve in 2011, Michaela hopes she can continue to put in her best performance for each tournament and improve her games.

Competing also in the Youth Girls Open division from SBF's team were Ilma Nur Jannah, Calista Tan and Felicia Teo who finished in the 7th, 10th and 15th positions respectively.
Jason Lim was the only bowler from our boys team to advance to the Youth Boys Open Masters and finished in the 19th position. Fellow bowler Danish Ramlan had a narrow miss to qualify in the Youth Boys Open Masters with his 25th position in the qualifiers.

This competition has provided our youth bowlers a good platform to compete amongst other youth bowlers as part of the bowling learning pathway in benchmarking their skills and eventually improving their game to stand up to the competition.

Highest Finisher from Asia in Qatar Open

Remy Ong, champion for the 2009 Qatar International Open was the only Asian who qualified through to Stage 3 finals in this year's Qatar International Open where he fought hard to defend his championship title.

Remy who was in the 10th position of the overall general qualifying standing earned a bye to stage 1 finals and competed directly in the stage 2 finals. He finished in the 7th position with a total of 1288 pinfalls and proceeded to stage 3 finals together with 9 other bowlers that include three Swedes - Mattias Wetterberg, Karl Wahlgren and Peter Ljung.

In the stage 3 finals where the top 10 bowlers from stage 2 finals were joined by the top six seeded bowlers in the overall qualifying standings, these 16 bowlers bowled 6 games from scratch. After the 6 games, Remy bowled 1215 pinfalls and finished 12th, missing out on 62 pinfalls to advance to stage 4 finals.

During the qualifying, Remy topped squad 8 and had a narrow miss to win the daily high series award to squad 7 leader, Jimmy Mortensen. Despite the miss, Remy indeed put on a commendable position to be the only Asian bowler who is the highest finisher in this year's Qatar International Open.

Youth Bowler Shines in Chinese Taipei

Our Singapore female keglers put in an impressive performance in the 11th Chinese Taipei International Open which ended on 5 Dec 2010 at Taoyuan, Chinese Taipei.

Youth bowler, Tan Yan Ling came in second in the Women's Open division, finishing ahead of prominent regional female keglers in the region such as Vanessa Fung of Hong Kong and Sharon Koh of Malaysia.

1st Runner-Up, Tan Yan Ling of Singapore

Yan Ling kept an open mind during the competition, particularly during the Stepladder Finals. "I was a little nervous before the stepladder but I did not let my nerves get a hold of my game." Said Yan Ling. "My coach used the Pattern Interrupt method which allowed me to shift my focus on and off my game at the appropriate times. This definitely helped me to perform better."

In the recently concluded 41st Singapore National Bowling Championship before the 11th Chinese Taipei International Open, Yan Ling was second in the Youth Girls division with a narrow miss to topping the division. She then channeled the disappointment to push herself to perform better in this tournament.

"One challenge I had to make during the tournament was to make quick adjustments when the lane transits to minimise my chances of getting low pin counts." Added Yan Ling. "Though I lost to champion Tang Ya-Chun, the biggest take-away from this this tournament is the exposure competing amongst athletes who have more experience and exposure from other major competitions."

Yan Ling won for herself NT$35,000 while National bowler Bernice Lim who was fourth won NT$20,000 while fellow bowler Fok Ka Wai who was fifth won NT$15,000.

Justin Lim Chia Loong was the best finisher from the Singapore Men's team in this tournament, coming in 6th after qualifying to the Men's Stepladder Finals and won for himself NT$20,000

Christmas has indeed come early for these bowlers and our heartiest congratulations to our bowlers for their achievements.

Youths Clinch National Championship Titles

National bowler Bernice Lim and youth bowler Tay Hui Chiang clinched the championship title after days of qualifying in this year's Singapore National Bowling Championship.

Tay Hui Chiang and Bernice Lim
Men & Women Champions for 41st Singapore National Bowling Championship

Bernice who is a triple gold medalist in the 2010 Asian Youth Tenping Bowling Championship missed the opportunity to represent Singapore in the Asian Games 2010. Bernice then channelled the disappointment on this lost opportunity to her performance in this competition where she ultimately won the title of Women's Open champion in the Singapore National Bowling Championship.

"As I did not qualify for the Asian Games women's team, this win certainly proved to show that my hard work has paid off and is definitely a confidence booster to me." Said Bernice. "My next aim is to qualify among the top 3 in the Chinese Taipei International Open next week."

Bernice had a smooth win over fellow bowler Teo Li Ying in the one-match roll-off and fnished with 204 pinfalls over Li Ying who bowled 191 pinfalls.

On the other hand, Tay Hui Chiang and Jaris Goh (student of Singapore Sports School) had to compete longer with Hui Chiang winning over Jaris in the first match with 206-175 and a tie of 181 in the second match. It was only in the ninth and tenth frame roll-off where Hui Chiang broke the tie with 43 pins over Jaris who bowled 28 pins.

"I was very nervous throughout the entire game and my coach had been trying to calm me down." Commented Hui Chiang. "All I did was to concentrate on every shot and not think of anything else."

"The training I received through SBF's National Development Squad Programme helps me to improve my game. I learnt the correct basics which is necessary for any bowler who wish to bowl well." Added Hui Chiang who is a bowler in SBF's National Development Squad Programme "AA" level.

Jaris Goh from Singapore Sports School and youth bowler Teo Li Ying were second while Vincent Lim representing ATBC and Clara Lau representing PBC were third.

Our bowling team did us proud, returning with a total of 1 Gold, 3 Silvers and 1 Bronze in the 16th Asian Games Guangzhou 2010 for Singapore.

Our Asian Games 2010 Bowling Team with SBF officials

Shayna Ng who bowled the first perfect game in this Asian Games came in second in the Women's Singles while compatriot New Hui Fen came in third in the same event. Shayna who was bowling with fellow team mates in the doubles and team events in the 2010 World Youth Championship emerged stronger in this Asian Games. Hui Fen, though young has proven to be an achiever when it comes to competition. Last year, she won 2 Golds and 2 Silvers in the 1st Asian Youth Games Singapore 2009 where her first gold in the Girls Singles competition was the first gold medal for Singapore.

Veteran bowlers Remy Ong and Jason Yeong-Nathan continued to put on a strong fight to win the Silver medal in the Men's doubles competition despite missing out in the Men's Singles competition.

Our first and only Gold Medal came in after 2 stiff days of competition in the Women's Trios event where Cherie Tan, Shayna Ng and Geraldine Ng overcome the strong pressure and rivalry where they bowled a total of 3917 and finished ahead of Korea and China. Their ability to overcome pressure is commendable.

Celebration with the Team
Though our bowling team missed out medals in the team competition, Cherie Tan, Shayna Ng and Jason Yeong-Nathan who qualified to the Masters shouldered the responsibility to add more medals to the team. The two days of qualifying had been tough but nonetheless challenging. Cherie Tan ultimately came in third in the Women's Masters and proceeded to the stepladder finals to challenge the top 2 bowlers from Korea, the country with the strongest medal count in this year's Asian Games.

Cherie had a smooth win over Choi Jin A of Korea with 266-191 where she then proceeded to bowl against top seed Hwang Sang Ok. Cherie had a close fight against her competitor over 2 games and finished off second after Hwang Sang Ok with a close score of 472-482.

"Our bowlers had consistently fought hard throughout the competition. Bowlers such as Cherie who is competing in this Asian Games the second time has proven that her training over the past 4 years is showing the results." Said National Head Coach William Woo.

Congratulations to our Team for their achievements!

"Dad, Let's Bowl!"

Parenting is a lifelong process requiring active participation from both parents and father's involvement in parenting had proven to have distinctive benefits to a child's development. To support MCYS's DADs for Life programme, SingaporeBowling launches the Father & Child Fun Bowl to promote father and child bonding.

The Father & Child Fun Bowl, organised by SingaporeBowling is introduced to schools onboard the DADs for Life programme. Under this sports programme, the father and child team gets to learn the basic bowling techniques in the bowling clinic conducted by a SBF-registered coach prior to the fun bowl for the participants.

On lane training by coach

Father and child start fun bowl

"This is a wonderful programme. All our participants enjoyed the bowling session very much as we felt it helped us (fathers) to bond better with our child." Commented Mr Ben Tan on behalf of the Parents Support Group of Kuo Chuan Presbyterian Secondary School.

Participants and other family members
This is a half-day programme which will end in March 2011 and is expected to attract more than 380 participants after the 4 rounds. To date, five schools had participated in this programme held in September and November 2010 and will end with the participation from 2 more schools.

This is another community programme organised by SingaporeBowling in support of our national community initiatives.

Let Your Dreams Take Flight

To bowl the perfect game may prove to be a challenge for some, it is nonetheless the first step for National bowler Remy Ong.

Remy started bowling since young and had continued to put in hours and hours of training on the lanes to pursue his dream, that is, to be a World Champion. Remy achieved his dream as a World Champion in 2006 and also won 3 golds in the 2002 Asian Games in Korea.

Speaking to a group of business professionals during the Canon Business Technology Show on 28 & 29 October 2010 at The Capella, Sentosa, Remy shared how he overcome difficulties which includes the need to balance his training and competitions with his personal life in his dream pursuit.

While bowling may be a sport he enjoyed as a hobby and a career, Remy also enjoyed other activities such as cycling and fishing while balancing a tight daily regime of bowling training and competitions to find time to engage in other personal past times.

Remy sharing on his ambition pursuit
Over the 2-day event showcase, Remy who is also Canon's sports ambassador inspired many with how they can be successful in their career and yet continue to pursue their lifelong ambition and hobbies, leveraging on business technologies at work.

At the end of his talk on each of the two days, 2 lucky winners walked away with a bowling pin autographed by Remy as a momento.

Emerging Stronger after Debut

Though our team of youth girls who debut at the 24th Asian Intercity Bowling Championships did not return with any medal, the experience through their participation had proven to be a valuable learning experience. Competing against other keglers from the regional bowling powerhouses such as Daegu and Pasay, this championship provided them the opportunity to benchmark their bowling skills.

Veteran to Lead Asian Games Bowling Team

Triple gold medalist Remy Ong will be leading the Men’s team in the upcoming Asian Games in Guangzhou. Joining him are fellow bowlers Jason Yeong-Nathan, Basil Low, Mark Wong, Benjamin Lim and Ng Tiac Pin.

Asian Games 2010 Men's Bowling Team
The Women’s team will be led by world champion Jasmine Yeong-Nathan and AYG double gold medalist New Hui Fen. The remaining team members comprise of Jazreel Tan, Shayna Ng, Cherie Tan and Geraldine Ng.

Asian Games 2010 Women's Bowling Team

Jason and Basil who won the 15th Asian Games Men’s Trios Silver and 1st Asian Youth Games Boys Masters Gold respectively are no strangers to competitions of such stature. Though the Men’s team also includes younger team members, they too have their individual achievements in other bowling championships which include the 2008 World Youth Championship and the 21st Asian Intercity Bowling Championship. With their combined strength, the men’s team does not lack any luster in their quest to win.

The Women’s team is also set to compete for the highest honor in this Asian Games. With their past achievements in the various prominent bowling championships which include the World Youth Championship 2010 and World Women’s Championship 2009, they are in good stride to perform in the upcoming Asian Games.

Mrs Jessie Phua, President of SingaporeBowling said, “Some of our bowlers may be young, but they have the drive and motivation to excel. I am confident they will put in their best performance and do us proud.”

The team is now in the final lap of their peaking programme which includes training under the simulated competition environment.

Daphne finished 6th in World Cup

Daphne Tan might have missed the World Cup honours this year, however, her second attempt in this bowling championship had not been futile.
Daphne managed to overcome all challenges posed by many other international bowlers in this annual bowling championship, competing amongst many prominent international keglers including Carolyn Dorin-Ballard of USA, Fiona Banks of England, Wendy Chai of Malaysia and Ann-Maree Putney of Australia.
To be able to qualify for the quarter finals for only the top 8 bowlers in the division is no small feat. Daphne managed to keep up with her game over the 3 days of 16 qualifying games and another 8 games after the first cut of the top 24 bowlers, where she secured a spot in the quarter finals, opened to only the top 8 keglers.

Daphne Tan competing in Toulon
After the quarter finals, Daphne came in 6th with a total of 6756 pinfalls. Though she did not managed to secure the top 3 spots, her second participation in this year’s QubicaAMF Bowling World Cup had proven to be a vast improvement from her first participation in 2007.
Jonathan Ang who represented Singapore in the Men’s division finished on the 45th position. Though Jonathan missed the cut to the top 24 in the Men’s division, this is his first participation in competitions of such stature.
Jonathan Ang and Daphne Tan competing in this year's QubicaAMF Bowling World Cup

Both Daphne and Jonathan were selected after an internal selection trial where both of them emerged tops.  Their participation this year had proven to provide both bowlers the opportunity to measure themselves against renowned international rivals.

Women can do it too!

No chance to try out bowling at a bowling centre? This is not an excuse. SingaporeBowling brought out our mobile bowling lane to Toa Payoh HDB Hub on 30 & 31 October 2010 to promote bowling as one of the initiatives under Singapore Sports Council, Women & Sports Group to encourage more women to engage in sports.

In this women outreach programme, more than 1000 female participants tried out bowling over the two days on the mobile bowling lane. For those who have never tried bowling before, they received bowling tips from our youth bowlers present at the event. During the roadshow, SingaporeBowling also promoted the Learn-to-Bowl programme to encourage ladies to sign up for this bowling clinic.

Youth bowler Oriana Tay explaining the Learn-to-Bowl Programme
This programme, to be held in Jan 2011, consists of a bowling clinic where participants will learn about basic physical game and handling the spare systems at games. It will end with leisure bowling where participants get to apply the techniques through leisure bowling with the assistance of bowlers. To sign up for this programme, participants just need to get a partner (with one being a female participant) and pre-register by Jan 2011. This bowling clinic will be conducted on a weekend morning and conducted by a SBF-qualified coach.

Team Spirit and Support are Vital for Success

The bowling centre was filled with zest and cheers as bowlers were preparing for the Collegiate League Masters on 14 October evening at Orchid Bowl E!Hub.  Prior to the Masters Final for the Collegiate League 2010 was the prize presentation for the Overall Team awards where Team Temasek 1, Team Republic 1 and Team SP 1 came in top 3 after 15 weeks of competition.
Team Temasek 1 with Mr Sam Ho of SingaporeBowling

Although this year’s collegiate league had attracted only 16 teams, the support among the teams was not lacking in any way. Bowlers who did not qualify for the Masters Final turned up to support their team mates competing in the finals and also to be present to receive the team awards.

Oriana Tay, 17 of Team Temasek 1 commented, “Our team set a target before the competition where we want to be first and we are happy to achieve it. Although I did not have the opportunity to train with my team mates due to studies and my regular training with SingaporeBowling, it is the team spirit and support from my team mates that makes me feel I’m with them. This helped me to put in my best during the league.”

Oriana who is currently studying in Temasek Polytechnic received the school’s scholarship which is awarded to students with good results in both academic studies and sports. She believes her participation with Temasek Polytechnic’s bowling team will continue to encourage youths like her to continue to bowl while pursuing their studies prior to joining the workforce.

In the Masters final, Clara Lim of Republic Polytechnic came in first with 1604 pinfalls over 8-game while Oriana Tay and Diana Koh of NUS followed in the second and third positions respectively with 1559 and 1540 pinfalls. Although Oriana did not manage to clinch the Girls Masters championship title as set out, her relentless pursuit towards the best performance is commendable.

For the Boys Masters, Travis Tay and Leonard Leong, both from NTU came in first and second with Travis winning with a mere 2-pinfall difference with 1682 and 1680 pinfalls. Surein of Republic Polytechnic was third with 1625 pinfalls.

The collegiate league is an annual bowling competition organized by SingaporeBowling to provide a cordial competition platform for like-minded youths with an interest in bowling and promoting sportsmanship among one another.

Strong turnout at the October 2011 BOWLinks bi-monthly challenge

BOWLinks is SingaporeBowling’s community project that started in 2005 to allow children and adults from the special schools and associations to enjoy a balance of life, through bowling as a recreational activity outside their school/work and home. Besides coming together to compete in a friendly format, these participants also have the opportunity to meet up with our national and development squad bowlers and obtain bowling tips with them. This also serves as a platform for our bowlers to contribute back to the society.

The next BOWLinks bi-monthly challenge will be held on 11 November 2010 at NSRCC Bowling Centre. Stay tune for more event updates.

BOWLinks- Fun Outside the Classroom

BOWLinks started in 2005 by SingaporeBowling to allow children and adults from the special schools and associations to enjoy a balance of life, through bowling as a recreational activity outside their school/work and home.

At our recent BOWLinks event on 5th August, students and adults from various associations such as APSN Katong School, WEDC MINDS and the Handicap Welfare association gathered together at National Service Resort and Country Club to participate in the bi-monthly challenge.

“The students always look forward to coming here to bowl” said Mrs. Rani a teacher at The Association for Persons with Special Needs. This event helps the students to understand and realize the importance of good sportsmanship as well as allowing them to have fun outside school.

Whenever a team from APSN Katong School wins one of the trophies at the bi-monthly challenge, teachers will arrange for a small presentation ceremony in their own school on the following day.

“This helps them to boost their confidence and also motivates the other students that are plenty of ways to excel not just academically” shared Mrs. Rani.

Through the charity events, students and adults get to interact with society. By mingling with the staff and volunteers, students are able to get exposure to the world around them and it helps build their morale and interpersonal skills.

After the 3 game series, SingaporeBowling had the honor of having Ms Michelle Tan, president of Bowling Association for the Disabled to help give away the prizes.

The second runner-up went to students from WEDC MINDS and first runner-up went to bowlers from APSN Katong School. Last but not least, the champion title went to bowlers from the Handicap Welfare association who had a total of 1257 pinfalls.

The next round of BOWLinks  Bi-monthly challenge will take place in October 2010. Stay tune for more updates!

Not one, not two, but three!

They didn’t just win one medal home; in fact they won three medals for Singapore.

National bowlers Jazreel Tan, Daphne Tan, New Hui Fen and Shayna Ng brought home two silver and one bronze medal at the recent World Youth Championships that was held in Helsinki, Finland.
In the Girls’ double event, it was their strong determination and motivation for each other, that helped New Hui Fen and Daphne Tan win the silver medal.
Team Singapore winning  their second silver

I was glad to have Hui Fen by my side. She provided constant support and that gave me the motivation to perform bettersaid Daphne.

Singapore's second pair of Shayna Ng and Jazreel Tan topped the second squad of the Girls’ doubles event with 2575, ahead of Colombia's Laura Fonnegra and Maria Jose Rodriguez on 2535.
However, during the semi-finals round, the Colombian pair scored a 412 and advanced to the final round, leaving Shayna and Jazreel with the bronze medal.

In the Girls’ Team event, the Singapore team had a terrific start to the game where they finished second in the second block of the game with 4971 pins.Ahead of them was team South Korea with 5024 pinfalls.

Singapore’s girls managed to advance to the final round after beating Malaysia with a total score of 860-769. The girls eventually took home the silver medal with a score of 785. Team South Korea won the gold with 839 pins.

Though they were thrilled by their third win, the girls were undeniably disappointed on not being able to win the gold medal.

Hui Fen expressed, “It was really close from the eight frame onwards. It’s a pity we’ve gone so far only to get a silver.
Among those who shared the joy was National coach William Woo, who couldn’t be more happy for them.
To see them put in their maximum effort despite the intense pressure is really heartening”.
He added, It’s the performance that matters, not the results”

Not only are the medals a symbol of hard work that paid off for the bowlers, it also establishes Singapore’s position among the top bowling nations.

Singapore came in third in the Girls’ medal tally beating England and USA who are in fourth and fifth position respectively. In the overall standing, Singapore came in fifth just behind Colombia.
Through the years, coaches at SingaporeBowling have placed more emphasis on teamwork and progressive training and it has paid off.

In the past, our youth teams lagged behind the United States and Malaysia, now we’re ahead of themsaid Coach William.
He expressed,” The future looks bright for the next few years”.
