We Top the Chart!

Singapore emerged as the top country in the overall medal tally in the V Commonwealth Tenpin Bowling Championship held in Selangor, Malaysia with 3 Gold and 2 Silver, ahead of England and Malaysia.

Representing Singapore in this championship are Remy Ong, Jason Yeong-Nathan, Shayna Ng and Geraldine Ng. All four bowlers were medallists in the 16th Asian Games in Guangzhou last November.

The 3 Gold were achieved in the Women's Doubles, Mixed Team and Men's Masters.

Shayna clinched the first medal with her second place in the Women's Singles competition. Together with Geraldine Ng, both bowlers who were gold medallists in the 16th Asian Games combined their strength once again and came in first in the Women's doubles competition. This was the first gold for Singapore in this championship.

Our team put up a consistent performance in the Mixed Team competition where they started leading the competition after the first block and beat other teams. Their commendable efforts led them to achieve the second gold medal for Singapore.

Shayna Ng was second in the Women's Masters defeating Nicki Ainge of England but fell to Hayley White of England.

Remy was one bowler who surprised everyone in this championship. Despite being last in the Men's Masters first block, he overcame all odds and secured the third position to qualify for the stepladder finals to compete against Matt Chamberlain of England and Adrian Ang of Malaysia. During the stepladder finals after defeating Matt Chamberlain, Remy had to bowl in the short oil condition against top seed Adrian Ang. However, he managed to bowl well and defeated Adrian to clinch the championship title.

Co-National Head Coach William Woo had nothing but praises for him, "It was amazing. He put up a fantastic performance in the Men's Masters."

Although medals were not accorded to the top 3 in the All-Events, Geraldine and Shayna was first and third respectively.

Despite having to compete with many other strong bowlers from countries such as Malaysia, England and Australia, our bowlers persevered and put in their best effort to prove they are capable to step up to the world stage.

Extending the Fun to Everyone and Every Workplace

72 teams joined in the launch of Canon SuperSeries 3 (2011) held on 25 February 2011 at Orchid Bowl, Orchid Country. Of these 72 teams, majority are new to this corporate bowling event and invited to have the first-hand experience of the new “Leisure” category introduced to this year’s event.

Aimed to continue to inject fun and promote work-life balance, this year’s event featuring the “leisure” and “competitive” categories will cater to different groups of bowlers out there.

“We shouldn’t lose the fun element.” Said Mr Von Chan, Director and General Manager, Business Imaging Solutions and Business Solutions division, Canon Singapore. “Besides supporting SingaporeBowling and our customers, this event will also put into practice our work-life balance mission.”

Apart from the fun bowl event, the participants and their supporters comprising of their families and colleagues also get to enjoy various fringe activities such as photo taking with Canon’s ambassador Jasmine Yeong-Nathan, airbrush tattooing and wine-tasting. Our national and youth bowlers were also present at the event to meet up with our participants and partners. Former national bowler, Valerie Teo currently with MOH Holdings was also one of the participants at the event.

SingaporeBowling also received a S$14,000 donation from Canon Singapore for its community project – BOWLinks to help bring the joy of tenpin bowling to special schools and associations with special needs.

In the Canon SuperSeries 3 (2011), Stamford Catering has continued their support for the second consecutive year. “Stamford Catering is happy to continue our partnership with SingaporeBowling for the second year. Jazreel Receives High Academic Honour Again

National bowler Jazreel Tan who is currently pursuing her Sports Management degree in Wichita State University in US was named as one of the student-athletes this year to receive the Academic All-American award, a high academic honours accorded to student-athletes who achieves a cumulative GPA of 3.50 or higher. Jazreel who was named Rookie of the Year in 2010 received the academic All-American award then as well.

“I am happy to receive the award as it gives recognition to student-athletes like me who have put in the hard work on both studies and sports.” Said Jazreel.

Student-Athletes in Wichita State University like Jazreel are required to balance the demand of academics and sports achievements which are rather demanding. “I feel it is important for one to be disciplined to manage both sports and studies well,” said Jazreel. “It is not easy due to the tight schedule hence time management is an important aspect for one to excel in both. This semester will be more difficult but I hope to continue to manage my time well and maintain my grades.”

Although Jazreel did not medal in the 16^th Asian Games in Guangzhou last November, she achieved an average of 200 pinfalls last year and was leading the nationwide rankings for first-year keglers in US. For 2011, Jazreel hopes to help the shockers team bring home a national championship in April.

“It is definitely not easy to be away and yet achieve good results in both studies and sports. I am thankful to my family for supporting me in everything I do, and also to SingaporeBowling & our sponsors and the shockers bowling program.” Said Jazreel.

Bowlers Get Ready for Another Battle

SingaporeBowling is sending its recent medalists in the 16th Asian Games - Shayna Ng, Geraldine Ng, Remy Ong and Jason Yeong-Nathan to the V Commonwealth Tenpin Bowling Championship from 19 - 27 February 2011 at the Sunway Mega Lanes Centre, Selangor, Malaysia.

World Champion Remy Ong is no stranger to this championship as he won 2 golds and 1 silver in the IV Commonwealth Bowling Championship in 2008. As the highly experienced bowler, he will lead fellow bowlers to excel in this upcoming prestigeous biennial bowling championship.

Jason Yeong-Nathan who was the highest finisher from Singapore in the 16th Asian Games will partner Remy once again and put their strength to pit in this upcoming championship.

Bringing along the experience and confidence from their achievements in the recently concluded 16th Asian Games in Guangzhou where Shayna and Geraldine outperformed other prominent keglers from Korea, Japan and Malaysia, the girls will debut in this championship and continue to strive hard and win more medals for Singapore.

This event promises much thrill as we see prominent keglers converge in this bowling championship to compete for the highest honour.

Conquering All Odds

Our bowling team returns on 21 January 2011 from the 21st Asian Tenpin Bowling Championship with 1 gold and 2 bronzes, exceeding our medal target. National bowlers Daphne Tan and Bernice Lim clinched gold in the women's doubles and our women's team came in third in the women's team-of-five competition. Bernice added the second bronze in the Women's All-Events.

"Despite feeling the pressure during the competition, Daphne and I decided to focus on the process which helped us to clinch the gold medal during the doubles event." Said Bernice Lim. "We are happy to achieve the goals we set before the championship."

Although this is the first time Bernice and Daphne partnered each other in a bowling champioship, the bond between the girls was strong.

"We used random thoughts to keep the pressure down during the competition. Both Bernice and I made some small talks to help calm ourselves down." Added Daphne Tan.

Despite not being selected to represent Singapore in the last Asian Games in Guangzhou, Daphne and Bernice felt this win proved their hard work has shown good results. In addition, both girls credit the peaking programme which helped to create stronger bonding between them and other team mates from the development squad.

"Although we missed the medal opportunity during the women's masters this time, we are confident our hard work will eventually pay off and we will strive hard for future competitions."

Despite being Asian gold medalists, Daphne and Bernice are mindful not to be complacent but to continue to improve their games and win more for Singapore.

Cherie Supports Worthy Cause

National bowler Cherie Tan will be supporting the Power Over Cervical Cancer (POCC) campaign from 2011 as their ambassador.

Together with other current ambassadors which include Beatrice Chia, Tan Kheng Hua and Rosalyn Lee, she will help raise awareness of the need for women and young girls to protect themselves from the life-threatening cancer by driving the preventive message to more women and young girls.
